Good health begins with knowledge. In order to begin your journey to wellness, let us begin with learning about essential nutrients and how they factor in to your health.
What are essential nutrients?
Essential Nutrients are the ‘tools’ that your body needs to function correctly (amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals). If you lack even one essential nutrient, then your body can become ill or at least not run at full capacity. The amino acids, fatty acids and vitamins need minerals in order to absorb and work correctly.
Essential nutrients are referred to as “essential nutrients” for two reasons:
1- We as humans can’t manufacture certain nutrients that are required for health, reproduction and optimal longevity – in fact, because we can’t manufacture them, we must consume them in optimal amounts each and every day.
2- Failing to consume the essential nutrients on optimal amounts every day, we will fall ill, become infertile, bear children with birth defects and live lives that are unnecessarily short, expensive and miserable.

How can you get all the daily essential nutrients your body needs?
If you eat a well rounded, disciplined diet you should be able to get most or even all your amino acids, fatty acids and vitamins. However, it is nearly impossible to get all your daily essential minerals from food. Without minerals, your body will not be able to properly absorb or have the amino acids, fatty acids and vitamins work well together.
However, mineral supplements vary in their absorbability and some have the potential to become toxic. Many people taking mineral supplements may not know that there are three different types of mineral supplements: Metallic, Chelated, and Organic Colloidal.
Metallic: These minerals are similar to the kind found in soils and rocks, and are only 8% to 12% absorbable. They can also build up to dangerous levels, accumulating in the liver, fat and brain tissue. Most tablet-form minerals are this type. This type of mineral is not organic in nature, so the body has a very hard time absorbing it and eliminating what it cannot absorb.
Chelated: These are metallic minerals that have been bound to a carrying agent, usually an amino acid or enzyme, assisting in the absorption of the mineral in the small intestine. This method, patented in the 1970s, makes metallic minerals 35%-45% more absorbable and much less potentially toxic to the body.
Organic Colloidal Minerals: These minerals have been processed through a plant and have gone through a biochemical transformation that makes them 90%-98% absorbable. When a mineral is drawn from the soil into a plant via its roots, the process alters the mineral’s bio-electric charge, changing it from positive to negative. Because the linings of our intestines carry an overall positive charge a natural magnetic gradient is created across which the mineral is absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Metallic minerals, however, do not go through this biochemical transformation and thus remain positively charged. The body is designed to recognize and use minerals in a organic colloidal form and will automatically rid itself of any extras. In contrast, the body has more difficulty recognizing positively charged minerals. As a consequence, they tend to accumulate in the body to sometimes dangerous levels. This is why, for instance, metallic arsenic has been found to be 65 time more toxic than is organically bound arsenic.
Buyer Beware: Don’t be fooled by mineral supplements that claim to be “colloidal.” The term “colloidal” refers to the very small particle size of the minerals used in these products. A far more important element of of both the absorbability and safety of a mineral is whether or nor the mineral is “organic” (derived from plant sources). Organic colloidal minerals are up to 20 times more absorbable and non-toxic when compared to inorganic colloidal minerals. It is a sad fact that many of the products marketed as colloidal minerals are actually inorganic colloidal minerals!
Some companies also get their product from inappropriate sources, such as ancient sea beds or clay deposits, instead of directly from plants. Some companies water down their minerals or spike their products with metallic minerals to boost spectrographic readings.
We are aware of only one company that meets the criteria of true organic colloidal mineral supplements, Youngevity. Youngevity offers the highest quality and most comprehensive line of liquid mineral supplements. Their organic colloidal minerals are the only ones on that market that have the legal consent decree from a federal court and an approval from the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services to be sold as a nutritional supplement. Other companies that have a vitamin or mineral just follow the labeling requirements of the FDA. Youngevity is the only one that has a federal consent decree to do it because, after two years of examining the minerals, it passed all their tests.
